Tips to make your ink cartridges last longer

Check your print settings: When you set up a new printer, look at the default print settings. Many printers are set to a high quality mode by default. If a document does not need that level of detail, a lower quality or draft setting uses less ink and prints faster. Internal memos and drafts, for example, do not need photo quality output.
Consider XL cartridges: Check whether your printer accepts XL (high yield) cartridges. They hold more ink than standard cartridges and usually work out cheaper per page. Multipacks can also lower the cost per cartridge compared with buying single units.
Optimise your documents: Some fonts use noticeably more ink than others, so a lighter font can make a difference over time. Check that documents meant to print in black and white are not saved as CMYK or RGB colour files, and select the greyscale or black only option in the print menu so the printer does not use colour ink on text documents.
Look for one cartridge per colour: When choosing a printer, a model with a separate cartridge for each colour lets you replace only the colour that has run out. With a combined tri-colour cartridge, the remaining ink in the other colours is lost when one runs out.
Print only what you need: Think about which documents really need a paper copy. Sharing files digitally where possible reduces ink use and paper costs.
